Briefing OCTOBER 2023
Overview

This exercise has been designed to give pilots a bit of extra understanding of the challenges faced by ATC.

Scenario

You have just landed at a FISO/unlicensed airfield, and you know that several of your friends are also inbound. On reporting to the "tower" to pay your landing fees you find them in a state of panic - their radio operator has been taken ill. In fact you are now the only one on the premises with a radio licence! It is now up to you to provide your friends with a "Radio" service to ensure their safe arrival.

Start Time and Place

Old Sarum Airfield, EGLS. Please use the forum to arrange a mutually convenient date and time to fly this with other club members. You will need to do this in order to have enough "traffic" to complete this challenge.

Flight Planning

You will depart from Old Sarum Airfield, EGLS, and fly by the route of your choice to make a full-stop landing at Compton Abbas EGHA. This event should be flown off-line, using JoinFS, ATC on TS3. Once at Compton Abbas either :-

a) Take over and man the radio station. After handling at least two arrivals and departures hand over the radio to another club member, and fly back to Old Sarum. Or

b) Depart Compton Abbas and return to Old Sarum.

c) Once back at Old Sarum do a T&G before returning to Compton Abbas.

Continue "shuttling" between Old Sarum and Compton Abbas until everyone in your arranged group has taken a turn manning the radio at Compton Abbas - your final landing should be at Compton Abbas.

What Aircraft can I fly

You may use any aircraft (including helicopters) classified as GA (within the EASA "light" category), see club rules for details. But bear in mind a very short route. Too fast and you will limit your time available to look and think.

Weather or not?

Before starting, check the weather. I recommend that all pilots set 'No Weather' so that it is easier to see other traffic. Also you will need to use Runway 24 at Old Sarum and 26 at Compton Abbas.

Airmanship

Remember to ANC (Aviate, Navigate, Communicate.) This event should be fun for all, both pilots and controllers. Bear in mind that other (non CIX VFR CLUB) traffic may also use the same airspace/airfields but everyone has equal priority (VFR). As ATC is likely to be provided by members with little experience of "the other end of the mike", Pilots should makes sure that all their calls are clear and considerate. - Your turn will come!.

NOTE THE RESTRICTED ROUTE IN / OUT OF OLD SARUM.

ATC

It is hoped that if 'groups' notify their date/time in the forum, ATC will be available at EGLS and, if possible, in attendance at EGLH to provide assistance, if needed. NOTE Event to be flown on JoinFS, ATC in TS3. Please use the club's "Group Flying" rooms, and reserve the "Destination" sub-room for Compton Abbas' Radio for both in and out-bound flights! (Should anyone in your group wish to also provide a radio service at Old Sarum use the "Departure" sub-room for this, again for both in and out-bound flights.)

Radio Discipline

This exercise is all about radio discipline, so you should be "tuned" to Compton Abbas (i.e. in the TS "Destination" sub-room) or Old Sarum (i.e. in the TS "Departure" sub-room) when within 10 miles of the field. Note: these 10 mile limits overlap so you will need to carefully decide when/where you need to "change frequency"!!

Club Star Award

A Star will be awarded to all who participate in the event during October. In order to earn your Star, you must file your PIREP in the following way:

  • Date Flown - Any date during October
  • From - EGLS
  • To - EGHA
  • Comments - Make a note of the number of Full-Stop landings at Compton Abbas
It will be left "on trust" that members fully follow the spirit of the event, and do a stint as AGO. (Anyone only doing the flying part would only really be cheating themselves!)

Charts and Notes

An updated CIX VFR CLUB Data Sheet will be available for EGLS Old Sarum
