Briefing | JULY 2023 |
Overview | The Club once again visits Oshkosh as they have several times over the years. Once again, members are invited to take part in the exciting flight into Wittman Regional Airport (KOSH), in the state of Wisconsin, USA, replicating and mimicking the real world OSHKOSH event which takes place this year from 24th to 30th July. This time though we will fly in from the north avoiding the numerous restricted areas. |
Scenario | CIX VFR Club will form up at the two different airports north of KOSH, depending on whether you are flying a GA aircraft or an ultra-light, on Monday the 24th of July fly, and the Fisk Arrival from the Greenlake (VPGRN) transition into KOSH per the FAA Notice. |
Start Time and Place |
The main Club event will take place on Monday 24th of July starting from 18:45 hrs UTC from Tomahawk Regional (KTKV) for GA aircraft and Wild Rose Idlewild (W23) for Ultralights. Prior to that date, make your way to the departure airports however you wish. We will be using the VATSIM or IVAO network. However, if you choose IVAO, it may well be that you have no company. |
Flight Planning |
On event day, July 24, 2023, we will all rev up our engines and have a group flight to Oshkosh from Tomahawk Regional or Wild Rose Idlewild. The attached flight plans account for the requirements to miss Restricted Areas per the Notice page 2. We will utilize the FAA Notice VFR Fisk arrival and landing instructions pages 5 - 13, or Ultra-light instructions on page 21, so remember to read them. On arrival there, we will park together on the grass on the west side of taxiway P opposite taxiway P4 or ultra-light parking area, which is the CIX VFR Group's designated parking spot. In your flight plan, you will need to put your aircraft colour as any ATC we utilize will use that along with your aircraft type instead of your call sign (see the FAA NOTAM page 7). If you choose to fly a Warbird or Helicopter, please read and follow the appropriate rules per the FAA NOTAM. Please note that unlike the NOTAM runway landing designations with colored dots, we will use normal terminology such as land long or land midfield or beyond. OSHKOSH SCENERY There is some FSX scenery available on our website to make the approach and landing at KOSH more realistic, with reporting points, the railway, and special runway markings etc. It can be downloaded from our Downloads/Scenery/FSX page. For MS2020 there is some updated scenery available from flightsim.to There is X-Plane scenery for Wittman Regional Airport (KOSH) on the X-Plane website. |
What Aircraft can I fly |
You may use any aircraft (including helicopters) classified as GA (within the EASA "light" category), see club rules for details. Approval is also given for members to fly any of the Warbirds listed as display aircraft on our website. |
Weather or not? |
Before starting, check the weather. Before starting, check the weather. I recommend that all pilots set 'No Weather' so that it is easier to see other traffic [CAVOK]. |
Airmanship | Remember to ANC (Aviate, Navigate, Communicate.) This event should be fun for all, both pilots and controllers. Bear in mind that other (non CIX VFR CLUB) traffic may also use the same airspace/airfields but everyone has equal priority (VFR). Should your enjoyment become impaired due to "unsportsmanlike" ATC, let someone know so that senior club members can pass on your concerns. Similarly, If you get something wrong, such as entering controlled airspace without authority, learn from the experience and follow instructions - even if requested to 'Disconnect'. However, if you have a problem, ask ATC for help, a lot easier that flying on regardless causing "confusion and mayhem"! And don't forget your first call for help is other club members, that is how we all learnt to do it. |
ATC | For the main event, we will being using the actual FAA NOTAM arrival instructions ”Special Flight Procedures effective Noon CDT July 20 to 6 am CDT July 31, 2023.” The attached flight plans accounts for these procedures. Your careful attention to the information on pages 2-13 is essential to make our flight safe, really interesting and enjoyable. Please download the FAA NOTAM from this link. View the video from this LINK to gain a further understanding. |
Radio Discipline | If we have ATC, the FAA NOTAM VFR arrival instructions include specific communications protocols for interfacing with ATC, be sure to be familiar and utilize those instructions. Take care not to let our Teamspeak chat cut across ATC. Stop any conversation immediately the R/T comes alive, then continue if "he wasn't talking to us". This is difficult because when transmitting on Teamspeak you can't hear the R/T. So be brief on Teamspeak, and be aware that ATC might be trying to get through. If anyone hears an R/T message which seems to be being ignored, just say "ATC is calling G-CIXN" if you have identified the callsign, or "ATC is calling us" which is a cue for everyone to be quiet on Teamspeak until ATC call again (which they will). Remember too that if asked to "Stand By" by ATC, you do not reply - not even "Roger", but simply wait until you are called again. |
Club Star Award |
The Club Star award will be awarded to all pilots who land at OSHKOSH between the 20th and 30th of July 2023. |
