Briefing | January 2023 |
Overview |
The format of this event follows that of a Flyball, where pilots fly to as many participating airfields as they can and collect Flyballs - each of which is numbered. This event differs in the sense that there are no other airfields, just landmarks dotted around the Isle of Man. |
Start Time and Place |
Ronaldsway Airport, EGNS, IOM. Tuesday 17th January, starting at 1900z on Vatsim, for a group flight or any time during January for an individual flight. |
Flight Planning |
You will depart from Ronaldsway Airport, EGNS, and take a coastal tour of the Isle of Man. There are 20 allocated landmarks around the Island, each worth points varying from 1-5. You are to choose 5 landmarks beforehand and state in the Route section of your flight plan using their identifier as set out below. At each landmark, you must complete a full 360° rate 1 turn overhead before proceeding onto the next landmark. You may complete this in either a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction, but you must be following the coast at all times. The use of flight planning software such as PlanG and LittleNavMap is encouraged, as the landmarks may be hard to spot in a simulator. Coordinates of each location are provided in the forum topic, feel free to use Google Maps to figure out where these are by pasting the coordinates into the search bar. For those using PlanG, you may have to convert these to Latitude and Longitude in order for it to recognise the locations. As above, a list of the locations of ALL the landmarks will be published separately in the Events area on the Forum |
Weather... or Not |
Before starting we will check the weather. If it is unsuitable for our trip as planned, then we will fix it. Something we can do in the simulator - wouldn't it be nice if we could do it in real life! You will need to turn off any on-line weather updates, and select calm in the simulator weather options |
Airmanship |
Remember to ANC (Aviate, Navigate & Communicate). This event should be fun for all, both pilots and controllers. Bear in mind that other traffic (not CIX members) may also be using the airspace and/or airfields but everyone has equal priority. Should your enjoyment become impaired due to "unsportsmanlike" ATC, let someone know to allow club senior pilots to pass on your concerns to the controller! Similarly, accept any refusal of access permission or admonishment lightly if you get something wrong, such as straying into Controlled Airspace without clearance, and use it as a learning point if required. If you wish to receive help and training for / before the event, please ask. Everyone wants to help....It's the CIX way! |
ATC |
Be prepared and expect ATC to be active over / around the coverage area. At the time of publishing you may expect EGNS Tower to be active, If EGNS Approach is on he can cover the southern half of the Island. |
Radio Discipline |
Take care not to let our TeamSpeak Chat cut across ATC. Stop any conversation immediately the R/T comes alive, and then continue if "he wasn't talking to us". This is difficult because when transmitting on TeamSpeak you can't hear the R/T. So be brief on TeamSpeak and be aware that ATC might be trying to get through. If anyone hears an R/T message which seems to be being ignored, just say "ATC is calling G-CIXX" if you have identified the callsign, or "ATC is calling us" which is a cue for everyone to be quiet on TeamSpeak until ATC call again (which they will). Remember too that if asked to "Stand By" by ATC it means you do not reply - not even "Roger", but simply wait until you are called again. Remember also that there are different ATC frequencies in use, and you may not be able to hear when communications are taking place. Make sure you have set and know how to use the TeamSpeak Mute switch. |
Club Star Award |
A Star will be awarded to all who participate in the event during January. In order to earn your Star, you must file your PIREP in the following way:
In order for the points to be calculated for each pilot, you must enter the identifiers of each of the 5 landmarks you selected, in the Comments section of the PIREP form, in the order you visited them in. At the end of the event, scores will be added up and announced on the forum. The pilot with the highest score wins. In the situation where two or more pilots achieve the same score during the group flight of the event, these scores will be based on the duration of their flight. Therefore you must file an accurate flight time from take-off to landing. |
