Briefing JUNE 2021
Overview

The Club's Senior member, 101 years old this month, travelled in a company aircraft as part of his job. Although not part of the official crew, he regularly flew right hand seat and got hands-on experience from time to time. In the 1950s, he celebrated obtaining his own instrument rating, one of the first private pilots in the UK to do so. This event celebrates his days of flying fast and luxurious twins.

Scenario The event consists of a simple flight from Guernsey EGJB to Manchester EGCC in a fast turboprop twin, or even a light bizjet, such as the Honda HA420 (pictured above). Provided you fly below the Class A airways, the direct track avoids all controlled airspace after leaving the Channel Islands CTR until you reach the Manchester CTR. There aren't many 230 mile trips in the UK's crowded skies where this is possible. Flying VFR of course, you are not permitted to fly in Class A Airspace, so check your chosen altitudes carefully. You must also keep to a speed of less than 250 knots.
Start Time and Place

The main Event will be run on Thursday 24th June, but members can fly it on any day of the month, if 24th is not convenient.

Flight Planning (Plan-G, Little NavMap) Do it yourself this month. You can choose your own sightseeing route, or fly direct as mentioned above.
What Aircraft can I fly

Any twin engine aircraft within the EASA "Light" category (see Club Rules for details), with seating for 5 passengers or more, preferably with a cruising speed of 160 knots or higher.

Weather... or Not

Before starting we will check the weather. If it is unsuitable for the trip as planned, then we will fix it. Something we can do in the simulator - wouldn't it be nice if we could do it in real life! Those using SquawkboxB or XSquawkbox will need to turn off the on-line weather updates, and select calm in the FS weather options.

Radio Discipline

Take care not to let our Teamspeak chat cut across ATC. Stop any conversation immediately the R/T comes alive, then continue if "he wasn't talking to us". This is difficult because when transmitting on Teamspeak you can't hear the R/T. So be brief on Teamspeak, and be aware that ATC might be trying to get through. If anyone hears an R/T message which seems to be being ignored, just say "ATC is calling G-CIXN" if you have identified the callsign, or "ATC is calling us" which is a cue for everyone to be quiet on Teamspeak until ATC call again (which they will). Remember too that if asked to "Stand By" by ATC, you do not reply - not even "Roger", but simply wait until you are called again.

Remember also that there may be several different ATC frequencies in use, and you may not be able to hear when communications are taking place. Make sure you have set and know how to use a Teamspeak mute switch.

Club Star Award

Although the main event will be on 24th, when we hope to fill Manchester airspace for an hour or two, all CIX CLUB pilots who complete the event on any day in June, will receive the Monthly Event star.
