Briefing | JULY 2020 |
Overview | By this time, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh should have begun ramping up their entire site in preparation for the July convention. Volunteers from across the country and world would have descended on Oshkosh. Together they would have formed work parties, their suppliers would begin start setting up tents and infrastructure. But because of circumstances beyond their control, none of this can happen now. They cannot even get to their hangar. Their conclusion is, like in any good flight planning, don’t take the risk. Therefore, they had no choice but to cancel AirVenture 2020. However, provided we practice safe distancing (4 mile spacing on final), that will not exclude the CIX VFR Club from holding a War Bird Fly in. Also as a special attraction, we will visit Niagara Falls. |
Start Time and Place | The main event will take place on Monday July 20th starting from 18:45 hrs UTC from Grand Haven Memorial (3GM). Prior to that date, you will fly three positioning legs to end up at 3GM. We will be using the VATSIM or IVAO network. However, if you choose IVAO, it may well be that you have no company. |
Airmanship | For the main event, we will being using the Warbird arrival from the FAA NOTAM arrival instructions. The attached flight plans account for this procedure. Your careful attention to the information is essential to make our flight safe, really really interesting and enjoyable. Please download the Warbird instructions from this link. Be sure to practice your military overhead approach. |
Flight Planning |
Positioning Flights As your chosen aircraft was shipped from Portsmouth to Niagara District Airport (CYSN), you will start there, and fly three legs to meet up at 3GM anytime after July 1st and before the Main Event flight on July 20th to Oshkosh's Wittman Regional (KOSH).
On event day, July 20th, we will all rev. up our engines and have a group flight to Oshkosh from 3GM. We will utilize the Warbird Arrival and the Overhead Approach and landing instructions. On arrival there, we will park together in the grass on the west side of taxiway P opposite taxiway P4, which is the CIX VFR Group's designated parking spot. After arrival, you will park at least six feet away from each other and there will be no hugging. We should plan to use the Military Overhead approach for landing, no matter what aircraft you are flying. The instructions for that manoeuvre can be downloaded here. As that is a tight manoeuvre, 4 miles separation should be adequate for aircraft following at the initial point; assuming no other traffic. Remember 2,300’ is pattern altitude for the overhead approach. Put in your flight plan remarks: “Request Overhead Warbird approach”. Please note that unlike the NOTAM runway landing designations with colored dots, we will use normal terminology such as land long or land midfield or beyond or threshold. |
OSHKOSH Scenery | There is some scenery avaailable on our website to make the aapproach and landing at KOSH more realistic, with reporting points, the railway, and special runway markings etc. It can be downloaded from our Downloads/Scenery/FSX page. There is X-Plane scenery for Wittman Regional Airport (KOSH) here on the X-Plane website. |

Flight plans (in .pln format) for each positioning leg, the main event leg, and the main event leg can be downloaded in the zip file here. |
Weather... or Not | Before starting we will check the weather. If it is unsuitable for our trip as planned, then we will fix it. Something we can do in the simulator - wouldn't it be nice if we could do it in real life! FSInn has a "CAVOK" button. Click this and you get calm clear weather. Those using Squawkbox B (FS) or XSquawkbox (X-Plane) will need to turn off the on-line weather updates, and select calm in the simulator weather options. |
What Aircraft can I fly | Any single engined aircraft can be flown in this event as long as it is within the EASA "Light" category (see Club Rules for details). As warbirds are a feature of this event, you should try to fly one of those, but if not, try to pick a faster single engined one to get the same result. |
ATC | At the time of publishing this event plan, ATC has been requested but not confirmed. It could be that on TeamSpeak we may have Oshkosh tower. |
Radio Discipline | If we have ATC, the Warbird arrival instructions include specific communications protocols for interfacing with ATC, be sure to be familiar and utilize those instructions. You can find a sample set of communications here. |
