Briefing 23rd August 2018
Overview

All round to John's house!

For the month of August you are invited to fly into my local – airfield, that is, not pub! This will be the opposite of the procedures in place at EGCJ for at Chatteris, overhead joins are not allowed. You must fly from Sherburn in Elmet – EGCJ and land at Chatteris Airfield deep in the Fens. Chatteris Airfield does not appear on the NATS website although it has an entry in my 2004 Pooley's Guide. There is no official ICAO code, but XP11 gives it as EG17 while FSX gives it as EG22. I presume P3d will use the same code as FSX. However, Neville has very kindly done us a data sheet for Chatteris & it is now on the website in the usual place. One interesting point about the route is that between Cleethorpes & Fenland Airfield you will be flying pretty well on the Prime Meridian. Extreme care will be required when landing at Chatteris as it is home to the North London Skydiving Centre, so there are a lot of parachute drops – particularly in the summer. A Twin Otter is flying daily from approximately 07:00Z to 19:00Z hrs daily. The RW airfield websites are - ukskydiving.com/location and cambridgeshire microlights. Please be aware that there are no overhead joins: that applies to Flight Sim as well as real world!

Start Time and Place This event will take place on Thursday 23rd August 2018 starting at 7pm British Summer Time – 18:00 UDT. This event may to be flown on VATSIM or IVAO network. However, if you choose IVAO, it may well be that you have no company, as more members fly on VATSIM.
Airmanship

Please remember that this airfield in an AGO manned station – callsign ' Chatteris Radio' on 129.900. PLEASE READ THE AIRFIELD DATA SHEET and listen to what is being said on the radio.

Weather - or not!

Before starting we will check the weather. If it is unsuitable for our trip as planned, then we will fix it. Something we can do in the simulator - wouldn't it be nice if we could do it in real life! For the general handling we need a cloud base that is at least 3000ft AGL.
FSInn has a "CAVOK" button. Click this and you get calm clear weather.
Those using SB or XSB will need to turn off the on-line weather updates, and select calm in the FS weather options.

What Aircraft can I fly?

Any aircraft can be flown in this event as long as it is within the EASA GA category and capable of landing at the destination airfield.

Flight Planning

You must file a flight plan for this trip.
Departure Airport - EGCJ
Destination Airport – EG17 / EG22

Other documentation can be found on the CIX VFR Club 'Airfield Data Sheets' page.

Plan-G

Two flight plans are available. Both are in .pln format, one for XP11 & the other for FSX & P3D. The routes are identical but the arrival airfield ICAO codes are different in the simulators.

ATC

At the time of publishing this event plan, ATC has not been confirmed. However, it is hoped that there will be some ATC provided, although most likely by Club members.

Radio Discipline Take care not to let our Teamspeak chat cut across ATC. Stop any conversation immediately the R/T comes alive, then continue if "he wasn't talking to us". This is difficult because when transmitting on Teamspeak you can't hear the R/T. So be brief on Teamspeak, and be aware that ATC might be trying to get through. If anyone hears an R/T message which seems to be being ignored, just say "ATC is calling G-CIXN" if you have identified the callsign, or "ATC is calling us" which is a cue for everyone to be quiet on Teamspeak until ATC call again (which they will). Remember too that if asked to "Stand By" by ATC, you do not reply - not even "Roger", but simply wait until you are called again.
Remember also that there may be several different ATC frequencies in use, and you may not be able to hear when communications are taking place. Make sure you have set and know how to use a Teamspeak mute switch.
