Rost (ENRS) to Framnes (ENNK) By: Mathias Fossum
Briefing 1st-31st July 2015
Overview

The July Event takes to Norway for some spectacular scenery. Welcome to Lofoten, this flight will try to recreate the best Norway has to offer. Lofoten attracts several thousands of tourists every year due to its marvellous mountain range. Lofoten attracts sports fishermen as well during the fishing season. It is said that you have a bite in less than a second.

Unfortunately I don't live in this part of the country, nor have I been here. I decided to put our flight here rather in my district, the Oslo lowlands which is more dull and less exciting.

You start off at ENRS, Rųst a small fishing community, including the largest bird cliff in north Europe. Several thousands of different bird species nest here every year. turn 41° to head over to the main land and the start of the Lofoten mountain range. You may want to tune Leknes NDB SAD 348°. Both ENLK and ENSH are good touch & go airports, decide whether you make an attempt or not. After ENSH you will make your approach into the Narvikfjord. This is where the battle of Narvik in the 1940s took place. Nazi-Germany wanted to establish a depo for the Norwegian iron ore. However the Royal Navy interfered on the 10th of April (65 years before I was born) ending with the sinking of 10 German ships. The approach into ENNK Framnes is somewhat tricky. Check the obstacle charts for reference in the Norway AIP.

Start Time and Place

The event may be flown on any day in July, however the date of Tuesday 14th has been chosen for those who wish to fly in company.
I would advise that if you do want to fly with other members on the 14th then log onto TeamSpeak by 1900z (2000 UK Local).

Mathias says that FSX Airports in Norway are awful. He recommends to either have ORBX Norway, or a combination of TileProxy and the relevant airports found here: freewarescenery.com/fsx/norway.

What Aircraft can I fly

Any aircraft can be flown in this event as long as it is within the EASA GA category.

Flight Planning Your flight plan should show:
  • Departure = ENRS Rost
  • Destination = ENNK Framnes
  • Route = ENRS - ENLK - ENSH - ODD - ENNK.
  • Comments = /V/ DAYLIGHT / CIX VFR CLUB /

At 120 knots this Route should take about 1 hour 15 minutes.

The flight plans (FS2004, FSX, X-Plane and Plan-G) file for this Event can be downloaded from HERE.

ATC

At the time of publishing this event plan, ATC has not been confirmed.

Radio Discipline

Take care not to let our Teamspeak chat cut across ATC. Stop any conversation immediately the R/T comes alive, then continue if "he wasn't talking to us". This is difficult because when transmitting on Teamspeak you can't hear the R/T. So be brief on Teamspeak, and be aware that ATC might be trying to get through. If anyone hears an R/T message which seems to be being ignored, just say "ATC is calling G-CIXN" if you have identified the callsign, or "ATC is calling us" which is a cue for everyone to be quiet on Teamspeak until ATC call again (which they will). Remember too that if asked to "Stand By" by ATC, you do not reply - not even "Roger", but simply wait until you are called again.

Remember also that there are several different ATC frequencies in use, and you may not be able to hear when communications are taking place. Make sure you have set and know how to use a Teamspeak mute switch.
