Introduction Back on home soil for the March Star Event! We'll be touring the big London airports (the ones open to GA, anyhow), starting at Stansted and finishing at City, with stops at Luton and Gatwick on the way.
Start Time and Place 19:30 - 20:00 zulu - The apron at Stansted airport.
Departure and Duration We will depart and fly individually or in small groups. The distance is approximately 115 nm. The following times do not include time spent on the ground.
Cruising at 100 knots, the flight will take about 1 hours 30 mins, allowing for time in the circuit.
Weather ...or not Before starting we will check the weather en route. If it is unsuitable for our trip as planned, then we will fix it. Something we can do in the simulator - wouldn't it be nice if we could do it in real life!
FSInn has a "CAVOK" button. Click this and you get calm clear weather.
Those using Squawkbox will need to turn off the on-line weather updates, and select calm in the FS weather options.
Routing Overview The route will take us in an anti-clockwise direction around London.

Flight Plans You will need to file a separate flight plan for each part of the journey.

Leg 1, Stansted to Luton:
departure = EGSS, destination = EGGW, route = Puckridge VRP - Hyde VRP

Leg 2, Luton to Gatwick:
departure = EGGW, destination = EGKK, route = Hemel VRP - High Wycombe - WOD - Guildford

Leg 3: Gatwick to City:
departure = EGKK, destination = EGLC, route = Reigate VRP

All plans should include comments = /V/ DAYLIGHT / CIX VFR CLUB

All bearings and headings given in the briefing below are magnetic, and no allowance has been made for any cross wind.
Airfield charts and information are available from the AIS web site, Pooleys Flight Guide, or the AFE UK VFR Flight Guide.
Don't forget to include information for your alternate destination, in case you need to divert.

Stansted to Luton

Before departure, file your flight plan. Set your transponder to 7000. Set the local QNH by pressing the 'B' key. Contact ATC for taxi instructions and clearance for your departure as filed. Follow the instructions you are given to taxi out to the active runway. Set squawk mode Charlie as you take up the runway. Departure will be to the West, and not above 1500ft on the QNH.

Puckridge VRP is approximaely 5 minutes flying time West of Stansted (8.6nm, heading 273 degrees from the airport reference point), where the main A10 crosses your path.

Fly a further 14nm on track 263 degrees to the Hyde VRP. This is approximately 2nm due South of the runway. 

ATC will give you joining instructions for the active runway.

ILS/DME: 109.15MHz

(Stansted ILS/DME 110.5MHz, SSD 429KHz)

Luton to Gatwick

Once you have landed and vacated the runway, you can re-file your flight plan for the next leg.  If you have an ADF, tune the Woodley NDB (WOD 352KHz). You can also tune the Bovingdon VOR (BNN  113.75MHz). Be sure to ident any navaid once in the air and before you use it. Contact ATC for taxi instructions and clearance for your departure. Follow the instructions you are given to taxi out to the active runway. Set squawk mode Charlie as you take up the runway.

Departure will be to the South, via the Hemel VRP. Hemel is at the edge of Luton's airspace. Remain below 1500ft QNH until you reach Hemel (or follow ATC instructions).

From Hemel, track 242 degrees for 14nm to High Wycombe. You should be able to spot Wycombe Air Park (EGTB) just beyond the town. Although you have left Luton's airspace, you are still beneath the London TMA, so make sure you fly not above 2400ft.

At High Wycombe track 142 degrees for 12nm, to WOD (you can track the NDB if you have an ADF fitted).

Once overhead the NDB, tuen to 113 degrees for 16nm to Guildford. From Guildford, you should receive joining instructions from Gatwick ATC. Fly and make your approach as directed. ATC will direct you to suitable parking.

The route described avoids Heathrow's airspace. But if you are feeling adventurous, you can ask for an SVFR transit, and cut off the corner on your colleagues. The transit route is Beaconsfield - Ascot - Fairoaks, not above 1500ft. Some of us flew this route in and out of Denham in February.

Gatwick to City

Again, you can file for this leg once you have landed and taxied to the apron.  Contact ATC for taxi instructions and clearance for your departure. Follow the instructions you are given to taxi out to the active runway. Set squawk mode Charlie as you take up the runway. Departure will be to the North.

Leave the zone via the Reigate VRP. Reigate is a small town at the foot of the North Downs, just to the West of Redhill aerodrome.

From Reigate proceed direct towards City airport, 035 degrees for 11nm. Be careful as you go over the ridge of the downs - you are still beneath the London TMA and must stay below 2500ft. Contact ATC for joining instructions.

NDB and VOR Tracking

The Instrument Flight document in the Training section of the club web site contains a section on NDBs and how to use them. If you are unsure how to track NDBs, download and have a look at this.
The document covers the use of VORs for direction and distance measurements as well.

Radio Discipline

Take care not to let our Teamspeak chat cut across ATC. Stop any conversation immediately the R/T comes alive, then continue if "he wasn't talking to us". This is difficult because when transmitting on Teamspeak you can't hear the R/T. So be brief on Teamspeak, and be aware that ATC might be trying to get through. If anyone hears an R/T message which seems to be being ignored, just say "ATC is calling G-CIXN" if you have identified the callsign, or "ATC is calling us" which is a cue for everyone to be quiet on Teamspeak until ATC call again (which they will). Remember too that if asked to "Stand By" by ATC, you do not reply - not even "Roger", but simply wait until you are called again.
Remember also that there are several different ATC frequencies in use, and you may not be able to hear when communications are taking place. Make sure you have set and know how to use a Teamspeak mute switch.
