 Briefing Thursday 24th November 2005  
Start Time and Place 19:30 to 20:30 zulu - The Grass Apron at Biggin Hill
General Notes Don't wait for everyone else to arrive - start when you are ready. Set your FS time to about midday to ensure daylight for the flight. After leaving the Biggin Hill airfield zone, we will fly at 2400 feet on the regional QNH. The "B" key will set your altimeter to the local pressure.
Biggin Hill to Manston Set transponder - 7000, and radios as required. Biggin Hill VOR/DME (BIG) is on 115.10, Detling VOR (DET) just past Maidstone is on 117.30, Manston NDB (MTN) is on 347, and Manston ILS/DME (MSN) is on 111.75. File your Flight Plan from EGBJ to EGMH, routing via Maidstone. Don't forget to include "Daylight / CIX VFR Club" in the comments. Tune COM1 and contact the first available of Biggin Tower, or Biggin Approach, or Thames Radar. (If all are available, you will be passed from each one to the next as you depart.) Request clearance, and taxy to the active runway as normal. Change the transponder code if required, and set squawk mode Charlie.
Runway 21: Take off and climb on runway heading until 2nm on BIG DME before turning left onto heading 115 to Sevenoaks VRP about 6nm, then left again onto heading 093 towards Maidstone about 12nm keeping the motorway and railway line on your left
Runway 03: take off and climb on runway heading until 1.5nm on BIG DME before turning right onto heading 110 towards Maidstone about 18nm, crossing the motorway and railway line about half way there
Maidstone: Overhead Maidstone you should be passed to Manston Approach. Turn left onto heading 085 towards Manston about 30nm, keeping the Thames Estuary coastline on your left
Manston: Follow joining instructions, and expect to be passed to Manston Tower to land. Vacate the runway (left from 10, or right from 28), squawk standby, report vacated, and taxy as directed to the TG Aviation apron, which is just off the Alpha taxyway close to the Bravo taxyway. Refer to the EGMH Manston airfield chart to see how to get there.
Manston to London City File a new Flight Plan from EGMH to EGLC, routing via Sheppey, Medway and Thames. Set radios as required: London City NDB is on 322, and the ILS/DME is on 111.15. Squawk mode Charlie.
Runway 28 allows a straight out departure, runway 10 will need a half circuit to depart from the downwind leg.
Heading 285 will take you over the middle of the Isle of Sheppey, across a wide section of the river Medway, and straight on over the river Thames, with London City airport directly ahead - total distance is 48nm.
You should expect to be passed from Manston Tower to Approach on departure, and handed over to Thames Radar over the Isle of Sheppey.
Depending on traffic you may be offered a straight in approach to runway 28. In any case, follow the joining instructions to land as directed. On runway 10 it may be necessary to back track if you have passed taxyway Charlie. On runway 28, continue taxying on the runway and vacate to the left on Charlie. Squawk standby, turn right and taxy to the General Aviation apron right at the end.
London City to Biggin Hill File a new VFR Flight Plan from EGLC to EGKB, routing direct. Set radios as required: Biggin Hill VOR/DME is on 115.10, and ILS/DME is on 109.35. Unless directed otherwise turn to the south at about 700 feet. Stay below 1500 feet until you leave the London City zone, then climb to 2400 feet. You should be able to see Biggin Hill to the south, so this leg is quite straight forward. Expect an overhead join, so make sure you understand how to do this. Depending on which ATC positions are manned, you may be handed over by tghe London City controller to Thames Radar, or direct to Biggin Approach.
Going round again If time permits some of the early birds may decide to go round again - simply repeat the above procedure.
Radio Discipline Take care not to let our Teamspeak chat cut across ATC. Stop any conversation immediately the R/T comes alive, then continue if "he wasn't talking to us". This is difficult because when transmitting on Teamspeak you can't hear the R/T. So be brief on Teamspeak, and be aware that ATC might be trying to get through. If anyone hears an R/T message which seems to be being ignored, just say "ATC is calling G-CIXN" if you have identified the callsign, or "ATC is calling us" which is a cue for everyone to be quiet on Teamspeak until ATC call again (which they will). Remember too that if asked to "Stand By" by ATC, you do not reply - not even "Roger", but simply wait until you are called again.
